MINUTES FOR 4/8/98 GODDARD TOASTMASTERS CLUB MEETING

The meeting started at 11:35 A.M. The Toastmaster of the Day was Martha O'Bryan. Jeane Ryan gave the Word of the Day "Longitude", Regina Cody gave the Thought of the Day on "Dead Horses". We watched the videotape of four speeches from the Area 45 Speech Contest: Dayle Hodge from Parliament Speakers gave a speech titled "The Tribute"; Joseph Stipkala from Triple Crown spoke about "The Vast Right Wing"; Jim Ronning from Space Speakers presented a speech titled "I Wish I Would Have"; and Angie Upshur from Goddard Toastmaster gave a speech titled "The Leadership Secrets for David".

Oswin Findlay was the Table Topic Master. Pat McHale commented on the four speeches. Jane Liu commented on "Winter Olympic coverage". Chris Scherer shared his thoughts about "Financial Crisis in Far East". A guest, Charles Papadimitris, talked about "The chihuahua dog advertisement for Taco Bell". Anouther guest, Joseph Cockey, said "Pasadena, Md. is the most beautiful city in spring". Martha O'Bryan shared her feelings about the death of country singer, Tammy Wynette. Maureen Armbruster talked about her new born baby, Travis Burke. Bill Pullen did not mind the El Neno weather on the East Coast. Regina Cody talked about "The Tax time Crisis". Chris Scherer shared his opinion about "President Clinton's Africa Trip".

The General Evaluator was Oswin Findlay. The Whisker Counter was Chris Scherer. The Grammarian was Maureen Armbruster. The Time Keeper and Ballot Counter was Bill Pullen.

There was a four way tie for best Table Topic respondent, the winners were Jane Liu, Chris Scherer, Martha O'Bryan and Pat McHale.

We had two new members, Charlie Papadimitris and Joseph Cockey, joining our group today.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 P.M.


Business Meeting Notes:

· Next Wednesday, April 15th, there will be an Executive Committee meeting in Bldg 11, Rm. C104, from noon to 1pm. Included on the agenda are: planning the club picnic and nominations for new officers. All club members are welcome to attend.

· The educational module "Building Your Thinking Power Part II - The Power of Ideas" will be presented in two parts, the first part on May 13th and the second part on June 10th. The coordinator for the educational module will be Evette Brown-Conwell, accompanying her will be Regina Cody and Jane Liu.

· Next TM meeting scheduled for April 22, will be held in Bldg. 28, Rm. E210. There are two scheduled speakers, Eva Stattel, and a guest speaker - the Area 45 International Speech winner, Larry Lawhon from the Speakezes Club. The TT Master for this meeting is Bill Pullen, we need a TMOD, a GE, a whisker counter, and we could use a couple more speakers.

· The Area 45 contest was held on Friday March 20th. Our club (Angie Upshur) placed third in the International Speech Contest and Regina Cody won the Evaluation Contest. The next contest is the District 36, Division D, International Speech and Evaluation Contest will be held on Friday, May 1, 1998 at Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in Laurel, Md. Regina Cody will represent our district (and our club) in the evaluation contest.

· Toastmaster International (TMI) President will visit District 36 clubs on Saturday, May 16 at the Quality Inn, 8727 Colesville Road, and he will participate in the TMI contest that day.

· Meeting location update - Building 28, Room E210 is available for all meetings except July 22 and August 12, 1998. Either of these dates would be appropriate for scheduling our club picnic. Dan Mandl will contact Quinton Barker to reserve the Pavilion. Also note: the meeting for Wednesday November 11th (Veterans Day) is moved to Tuesday November 10th, and the for the Holiday Party, Room E210 is available for club use from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.
