MINUTES FOR 5/28/97 CLUB MEETING

The meeting started at 11:40am. The Toastmaster of the Day was Jeff Bolognese. Eva Illescas gave the Word of the Day, "melioration". Pat McHale gave the Thought of the Day. The first speech was given by Dan Mandl and entitled "A View From the Back" which discussed his observations on TM speech contests, and his strategies for what makes a winning speech. This was speech #2 from the Entertaining Speaker advanced manual. Martha O'Bryan spoke next with speech #3 from the Storytelling manual. Her speech, "The Rumor" was a story with a moral about the widespread consequences of spreading rumors.

Table topics were presented by Claudia Brevard. All centered around the theme of the upcoming new millenium. Jeff Bolognese responded on the environmental challenges of the 21st century, Bill Pullen discussed the possibilities of a merger between NASA and NOAA, Chris Scherer talked about the potential for a female President in the near future, Eva Illescas gave her thoughts on a senior center in her neighborhood, Dan Mandl talked about the legacy of Goddard TM's, and Oz Findley shared his thoughts on the possibility of humans creating communities under the sea. Oz was voted best table topic respondent.

Maureen Armbruster led the evaluation portion of the meeting. Chris Scherer Evaluated Dan and Oz Findley evaluate Martha's speech.

Chris Scherer was voted Best Evaluator and Martha O'Bryan won for Best Speaker.

Elections for officers were held before the prepared speeches were delivered. The officers elected, on a unanimous voice vote, are as follows. Note that the offices of VP-Membership, VP-PR and Sergeant-at-Arms are each held by two members:

Toastmaster Leadership Institute training will be held twice this spring. The first session will be held June 7, at Executive Plaza North, 6130 Executive Blvd., Rockville, MD. The second session will be held on June 21 at Chesapeake Bell Atlantic, 13100 Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD. Both sessions run from 9:00am-3:00pm. Officers should plan to attend training for their specific office. These run about 90min and are finished before noon. Classes are open to all TM's and, best of all, it's free!
